Sleeping in the Aviary / You and Me, Ghost

"If you were to ask Elliott Kozel, throaty front man of the eccentric 5-piece Sleeping in the Aviary, what he thinks of his new album You and Me, Ghost, he’d probably respond cheekily “Best one yet!” He’d laugh since this is the way he introduces all of his albums, but I might have to agree. As much as I’m a sucker for their first two albums especially, by the time I was approached about reviewing this album I’d already gotten my mitts on an advanced copy, and iTunes informs me I’d already listened to it over 20 times through.

A perpetual dark horse in the mainstream indie scene, SITA doesn’t spend much time worrying about convention or genre, weaving from post-punk to raspy-folk to Hawaiian-garage and now to radical doo-wop. Resurrecting dated musical styles may not be a revolutionary concept, but in a sea of old-as-new competitors, Sleeping in the Aviary’s approach is unique. They don’t define themselves around an old-timey persona, but instead continue to evolve their style organically over time, never allowing their musical ilk to be resigned to a unilateral category.

You and Me, Ghost is rife with shoo-be-do’s and sha-la-la’s, but make no mistake, this is not your grandmother’s 50’s record. Whether it’s a tender ballad or a song so frantic the words are trapped stampeding out of Kozel’s mouth, every song is still unmistakably Sleeping In The Aviary in style. Smart-alecky but playful, grainy but sweet, this release adds yet another layer of complexity to SITA’s repertoire.

The album opens with their new hit “Talking Out Of Turn,” which is probably the song that best ties together You and Me, Ghost. It’s an abrasively smooth number that sets the tone for the album, preparing you both for prettier numbers and those with more of an edge. It encapsulates not only the style but also the theme – this is their first album where all the songs are about girls.

“Talking Out Of Turn” is easily one of my favorite tracks on the album, but there’s no shortage of stand-out tracks. “Love Police” and “On The Way Home” are probably the most deranged, but I also think in their recklessness that they’re the most fun. On the flip side, the title track is one of the slower numbers, and rattling in its earnestness. A forlorn letter to the ghost of a former lover, complete with haunting “ooh-oohs,” its somber affection is pretty touching.

Every once and awhile Kozel steps aside to let one of his bandmates wrestle with the lead vocal role, and on this album we get to hear newest SITA member Kyle Sobczak play frontman on both “So Lonely” and “Karen, You’re an Angel,” my other two favorite tracks on the album. “So Lonely” has a really fuzzed-out 50s-beach-party kind of vibe, and “Karen, You’re An Angel” is like a 2011 answer to the 1950’s Penguin’s song “Earth Angel.” A love song about getting older and saggier and growing nose-hair, it’s definitely sillier than something you’d have heard in the 50s, but the sentiment just as dear and the harmonies just as tight.

Other tracks on the album include “Someone Loves You,” which is probably the most mainstream sounding song on the album, the toe-tapping “Ain’t So Bad,” and then four much airier songs woven throughout the second half of the album – “Are You Afraid of Being Poor,” “Molly,” “Infatuation,” and the last track “Pathetic Housewife Remembering Her First Martini.” These are the four more timeless numbers on the album – relatively straightforward songs that actually might have been hits decades ago, though there’s a bit of hollering toward the end of “Infatuation,” some distorted shrieks in “Molly,” and some murky riffs in the other tunes that still distinguish them as current-day numbers.

Now promoting their 4th album in just 5 years and about to embark on yet another unrelenting tour schedule, Sleeping in the Aviary is teetering on the brink of success with You and Me, Ghost. Big guys like Daytrotter are starting to take notice, and I suggest you get yourself an album and catch them on tour now so you can brag later that you liked them before they blew up.

WORT’s 12th Annual Block Party is rapidly approaching! Be sure to mark your calendars for Sunday, May 17th and plan to head down to the 600 block of West Doty Street, corner of Bedford, right next to the station. The party starts at 11am and the fun continues until 7pm. As always, there will be live music, children’s activities, food from around the world, art and craft vendors and a beer garden featuring fine Wisconsin brews! We will also have raffle with fabulous prizes donated by area businesses.

Once again WORT has teamed up with the Madison Homebrewers and Tasters Guild to procure the area’s finest award winning micro-brews. WORT’s 7th Annual “No Crap on Tap” Beer Garden will feature brews from the Great Dane, Ale Asylum, The Grumpy Troll, and MORE.

This year’s music lineup is as exciting as ever with live performances by a variety of local and award winning talent, featuring: Ladies Must Swing, Cris Plata with Extra Hot, Cajun Strangers, Queenie & The Blue Cats, Rob Dz & The Funkalistics, and Sleeping in the Aviary.

The Block Party will also feature WORT’s first CD and record sale of 2009. Show up early and get the best picks from the ever growing selection of rare and unusual finds at bargain prices!

Top prizes for our Block Party Raffle include a Diamondback aluminum frame bicycle, a pair of weekend passes to the 10,000 Lakes Music Festival, a Sony HD tabletop radio, and a set of 4 tickets to your choice of select Overture Center Events. Tickets will be on sale at the event, and are also on sale now at the WORT studios (9am-5pm, M-F). Tickets for the raffle are 2 each or 10/10.

We played a show last night in Minneapolis & spread the mirth. I am consistently impressed with the staff at the Hexagon. The door guy is usually wearing some kind of motorcycle shirt and shining flashlights at faces when it's time to go. Pretty awesome. Thanks to all the bands that played (ShugE, Bouncer Fighter, Absent Arch, & A Paper Cup Band) & a special thanks to A Paper Cup Band for hosting the show for their CD release (buckets of luck to them on their upcoming tour). A separate bucket of hugs goes out to Andrew because he is great.

back in the (tour) saddle again

greetings superfans,

Things have been going well so far on the ol' road. Our show at Go-Go Town in Chicago was crowded, smoky and fun. We played with a hip hop group (refreshing, hyphy) and our buddies the Nothingheads. Lots of Chicago dudes got excited with us, despite their spirits being shaken at all the corruption going on in their fine state. We had a 4 hour non-stop joke session with Shaun & Tyler later. Here is something weird that I am about to do; this is a quote from our myspace page comments about this show that I think sums it up pretty well:

"I hope we don't have cancer from Go Go Town. I'm still coughing up black tar and the core beliefs of Westboro Baptist Church and started liking Dane Cook. so I think I have a little bit of tha canca."

Mike & Molly's in Chapaign, IL the next night was also an excited/exciting show, we tore it up with some Wisconsin friends later which almost led to some fist fights between band members. This was Celeste's fault and she is (kind of) sorry. Not as sorry as you're gonna be, Elliott.

Murphy's in Memphis was all around twangy. Hung out with different Wisconsin friends who now live in TN to show us what Memphis is all about (twang, fun). Thank you to all of our friends from Madison who have moved to different states that we end up playing! Keep it up.

Tonight we head to Little Rock, Arkansas. There are plans to make some more hot music videos to keep you all warm up there.

this place had a restaurant called "extreme wieners" and they gave us from free veggie dogs. they were so good. we played with our good friends AMO JOY who we will be playing with in Madison on the 22nd! They are great people and their music is great and you will love them.

Nov. 14- Louisville, KY- The Brick House
We were really tired or something this night. Elliott got attacked by a cat who was named Alistair Crowley. Seriously. But the people we stayed with were really nice; thanks you guys!

Nov. 15- Indianapolis, IN- Locals Only
This was a night of surprises. We were supposed to play at one place but something fell through and we ended up playing 1st at Locals only, which was a pretty cool venue. Amo Joy lives in Indianapolis and came to see us play, yayy they are awesome. There were two crazy superfans from Wisconsin who also showed up and let us stay at their hotel with them & took us out to breakfast... Weirdos. After we played, we went to see Amo Joy play at the place we were originally supposed to play. They were awesome.

Last night (Nov. 16) we played at the Cinemat in Bloomington, IN. Dustin Diamond was performing in the same building as us. Somehow he was performing 4 nights in a row in Bloomington, IN. The Cinemat is also an independent video store that lets you pick out a film to have projected behind you as you play. We decided to just play the cracked out video that the dude in Gainesville, FL made of us playing.
We are actually still in Bloomington because we're playing here again tonight (house show).

Nov. 2- Charlotte, NC- Snug Harbor / seafaring-themed bar. stayed with phil's parents, ate some veggie burgers & slept comfortably.
Nov. 3- Mt. Pleasant, SC- Village Tavern / bar in a strip mall, but a bunch of cool bands have played there. we had a successful night with some really fun kids. pogs were played. and more.
Nov. 4 - rainy day off in Florida. watched the election results at a days inn. whoabama!
Nov. 5- Jacksonville, FL- Club TSI /went to the beach during the day, hung out with Chase after the show who was the best on his finger lickin banjo (both his dog named banjo & the instrument). had some folk jam sessions. our rooftop carrier flew off of the top of the van on the highway; phil's suitcase got run over & we lost elliott's sleeping bag somehow.
Nov. 6- Gainesville, FL- Backstage Lounge / we have a video of this show. it is hilarious. the sound/lighting/video guy told us that watching us took him back to droppin acid in the 60s. when you see the video he took (and the lights he did), you will understand why he felt this way.
Nov. 7- Tallahassee, FL- Oaf House / the house show after party that never ended. we went to another house after the after-party with a campfire and provided the sing-along sessions. my end of night = someone set their pet rat on my leg and left the room and i was confused but then i passed out.
Nov. 8- Athens, GA- Flicker / downtown Athens on a saturday night reminded me quite a bit of Madison. we were told to turn ourselves down about 3 times, which is a bummer without question. especially since we had started out very quietly to begin with. bars attached to venues that put on rock shows need to figure out how to soundproof the bar rather than fucking up the sound of the bands that they book. other than that, the place was cool & the other bands rocked times two (quietly).

So, the leather bass strap on my accordion deteriorated & busted. Right as we were about to play. I duct taped it. When it broke, I dropped the accordion, which lodged a button at a weird angle so that it remained stuck in, creating an eternal B minor diminished chord of doom. Happy Halloween, Chapel Hill. Today I found some tiny screwdrivers & took it apart and hopefully fixed it enough to continue to work for the following 21 shows before we return to good ol Wisconsin. Thanks to the awesome dudes at the Night Light for the help and good cheer.

So we haven't updated since NY. The above pictures were taken at on Sunday, NY show #1. On Monday, we played NY show #2 at Trash Bar in Brooklyn, & afterward our van got broken into. boooooo. Window smashed, a few items stolen. None of our equipment or anything, so mostly it was just a pain in the balls & pockets. Sendin' out some (R. Kelly) love signals to Justine for her stolen objects. A big thumbs down to NY burglars for leaving a bad taste in our mouths. Thumbs up, up & away to those who came to our shows and let us stay with them! You are awesome. Thanks for lessening the natural tendency to turn misanthropic after such bullshit and reminding us that people are pretty great for the most part, right? Right. Well, you nice people are great, at least.

After that, we headed down to Philly & played live on WKDU on a rainy Tuesday afternoon. Apparently the accordion was way too loud in the mix so that listeners had to hear my terrible mistakes EVEN LOUDER than normal. F. Sorry. The embarrassment won't be taken to the grave, don't worry, but please note that I did my push-ups for it after crying in the bathroom. Later that night we played at The Fire, which was a bar attached to a fire department(?). Strange. After the show we drank hot chocolate and watched a Goosebumps movie [with not-spooky-at-all introduction by R.L. Stine himself, wearing a werewolf glove on one hand]. Hell yes!!!

Last night we played at The Triple in Richmond, VA. It was a pool hall style place where you can still smoke inside. I learned again (once again) that you can never guess how a show will turn out, even if you are guessing about it 5 minutes before you play. It really seemed like we were going to play to an empty bar but instead people ended up dancing and having a gay olde time. Following the rock'n'roll we rock'n'rolled some more with some dudes who were STILL rocking this morning with a bottle of whiskey and some drag makeup shit going on when we left at 11am. Pats on their backs fully deserved.

Today we wandered around D.C., rode some escalators and looked at some paintings. Tonight we play at the Velvet Lounge.

Elliott & Phil are napping in the van, the internet is apparently everywhere these days so I'm sitting next to them, & Michael is probably at the Lincoln Memorial doing a crossword puzzle or something. Perhaps he's working on writing the joke of the day, so I'll let him add that whenever he gets back.

Pt. I:
While we were driving to a cemetary to eat lunch & record one of Michael's jams, a terrible song came on the radio that Phil insisted on listening to. Michael asked what it was, and Phil explained that it was from the movie Coyote Ugly. "can't fight the moonlight" was the song.

We could not have possibly have expected what we were in for. We finished recording Michael's song & were standing around in this semi-urban graveyard. Watch Michael's video blog about it. It is basically accurate.

The only wrong parts are that he was not alone, and I don't think the coyote had actually acknowledged Michael at any point. Maybe I'm wrong about that second part though.

So after we watched the coyote take a bite out of a groundhog and then completely devour a squirrel before our very eyes, we played a show with our good buddies the Pale Young Gentlemen, also on Science of Sound, & from our stompin grounds of Madison, WI. represent!

Last night was fabulous fun in Boston, err Allston or wherever we are. We spent most of the day feeling poor, broke and uneducated in Harvard Square wandering around trying to avoid all the Obama people who were constantly hassling us to give them "5 minutes for the democratic party". We didn't give them the time of day. We played at a bar that had some sort of "Irish Theme" to it called "O'Brien's" where we got to meet some of the people who work at Planetary Promotions who are helping spread the Sita Love all over the place! Here is a fabulous picture of us with Christine (Sita's main squeeze at Planetary).

Afterward we got to hang out with Celeste's pal Joe and had a long Gin-fueled night of writing nasty rap lyrics and laying down some hot tracks on Joe's digital 8-track. Wuhaa!
update: We had to take down the tracks we put up because they are too dirty for blog-land.

alright, quick update.

Tower 2012 was super. It was less nasty than I was told it was going to be, but nasty enough to make for some crunchy music. mmm. Other bands were great, machine go boom! = yayy. We made a trip to the Giant Eagle grocery store, which we don't have in WI, and it was the best.

The house show in Fredonia, NY was attended by a ton of cool kids who most likely did not make it to their college courses the next morning. a girl wanted to get in a fight with me, which was pretty funny. We were supposed to play at BJs, which was right around the corner from the house we ended up playing at, so we went there afterwards and danced and spelled words with our fingers. I will post those pictures later.

The show at 51 3rd in Troy, NY was planned by a friend of the band who used to live in Madison who treated us to a lovely vegan dinner at his house. We had to leave shortly after the show ended to drive to NYC, where we arrived at about 4am this morning so that Michael, Elliott & Phil could get to the airport to fly back to Milwaukee for their best friend's wedding. They managed to sneak in some practice of the covers they will play. We'll see how that goes. I'm very excited to hear how delirious they are by tomorrow.

My 1st time in NYC has been delirious already. I slept in the van and woke up driving through central park with the boys screaming "green light!" at every light we went through. That changed to them screaming different things that were the color of the lights (i.e. "Dragon!") and yelling things at the cabs and other inanimate objects. "follow the cab of corn!"etc. We were bonkers. I imagine they still are, but I managed to sleep last night and am about to explore the big city by my lonesome country mouse self.

Tomorrow the boys will be back in town, and we'll go to Portland, ME on Monday. Then back to NYC next weekend.

We recorded another video in Fredonia, NY, for kicks. I will hopefully get some wifi lovin later and post it as well as some stupid pictures.

The boys all went to the post office and left me here. Strangely, some really good doo wop is playing right now, and the nice employee just gave me a free cookie! Hog heaven, you might say. Not to mention the fact that Cleveland is very pretty. Lots of trees in yards and a lovely post-rain feeling.

We are getting relatively smelly. Relative to flowers, say; relative to the spiced chai latte that just wafted past me. But other than that, good vibrations are around us everywhere we go, and we are all managing to stay in high spirits. As far as I can tell, we aren't sick of each others' music yet. It's been good to audio-peruse through each others' collections.

Frankies in Toledo was fun. We sat in back and did more arts & crafts. Phil counted how many times one of the guitar players from another band put his foot on the monitor. ~15 by song #2. I think he lost count. Lots of drum stick tosses going on as well. Kool Keith is playing there on Friday.

In down time, the boys are preparing to play at a wedding in EAU CLAIRE, WI of all fucking places. How on earth are they playing a music in Eau Claire, WI this Saturday, when we are playing in Troy, NY on Friday, you ask? You tell me. No really. Explain how this will work.

Tonight we play at Tower 2012. Rumor has it that sometimes you wake up with dead mice in yr boots there, which is both bitchin & pretty funny.

We are currently in Toledo working on arts & crafts at a coffee shop. We bought a bunch of weird books at the thrift store which we are making postcards and finding inspiration with. Look out, friends! Elliott is teaching me some tips from the book he purchased, "Find a Husband After 35".

"If you have time to paint your nails each week, then select a muted color. No bright red, please - you are a future wife, not a hooker."

Well, there's my first mistake. The liquid bandage on my nails is probably a close second. The book also suggests going to Starbucks for coffee instead of drinking it at home, because you certainly won't meet your future husband at home but might meet him while reaching for a to go lid.

Last night we played at Trumbell Plex in Detroit. It was another fun show; good turnout & good people! A fucking cool venue, apparently the part of the plex that we played in used to be a funeral parlor. Cool. We were told that it was later converted into some sort of theater. Now it's a collective of people which includes several buildings, a garden, greenhouse, etc. We would love to play there again.

Our show at Soap Duck Love Club last night was filled with emphatic Chicago folks who danced their hearts out and got sweaty with us. We heard some other great bands and had a blast playing.

We also said goodbye to our friends in A Paper Cup Band who we played with at Big V's & the Frequency, and who came to our shows at the Borg Ward & Soap Duck on their journey back up to MPLS. They are super people, and play some fiery music that we want you all to listen to. Check check em out.

Shaun's roof is the best. So far, playing bean bags in the hot October sun, drinking beer, eating a moonlit dinner among friends, a good night's rest, and this music video are some of the highlights of events taken place on his roof this weekend. We are all feeling pretty grateful for the world's hospitality right now. Thank you everyone!

We started the tour by voting in Madison before heading to Big V's in MN, where Big V himself told us that we were "chuckin' & jivin". There was a playboy pinball machine & lots of spirited dancing.

The Frequency show in Madison was super sweaty once again. = good. Sorry to those who couldn't get in. We will be back in Madison on November 22nd to play another show!

The Borg Ward in Milwaukee was pretty awesome, it was followed by a rousing discussion of favorite/least favorite kinda of candy. Sour Patch Kids won as "most liked by those in attendance" and Good & Plenty lost. We were in a hot tub during the discussion. I really like Good & Plenty, for the record.

Ronny's in Chicago reminded us of how much we like playing right on the ground instead of a stage. I found out that liquid bandage is the answer to my self-inflicted saw injuries. An unassuming bar with an toothless mexican bartender who would take a shot & go outside to smoke a cigarette with several people waiting for drinks at the bar. We liked him.
